Solar Panels & Kits
How do I calculate solar energy needs?
System size depends on appliances you plan to run. The LUX Solar Calculator estimates required solar wattage and battery capacity. Locations with less sunlight or winter use typically need higher capacity; sunnier areas or summer-only use may need less.
What are solar panel dimensions?
Detailed specifications and measurements are listed on the Solar Panel Product Page for each panel included in kits.
Fixed or flexible panels?
Fixed panels are recommended for affordability and durability. Sunman eArc flexible panels work well for marine or curved-surface applications and meet standards approved by Australia's Clean Energy Council.
Where are products made?
Most panels are manufactured in China. REC Alpha panels are designed in Norway and produced in Singapore and Norway.
Two small panels or one large panel?
Choose based on roof or installation space fit -- both perform efficiently at equivalent wattage.
Installation & Wiring
Do kits include installation instructions?
Every kit includes a detailed DIY Installation Manual. Auckland-area installation services start from $699.99. Contact info@luxsolar.co.nz or 027 458 9674 for assistance.
Series or parallel wiring?
Series wiring is recommended for most setups, as modern half-cut panels reduce shading issues. Use the AnyKit Builder to calculate the most efficient option. A parallel connection kit must be purchased separately if preferred.
Series or parallel panel installation?
Series connection is recommended for most systems. High-wattage installations may benefit from parallel wiring to better match MPPT controller requirements.
Electrical safety precautions?
A competent installer is recommended. Refer to WorkSafe New Zealand for official guidance. Extra-low voltage (ELV) systems complying with AS/NZS 3000 and AS/NZS 5033 don't require certification or inspection if operating entirely at ELV (not exceeding 50V AC or 120V ripple-free DC).
Battery & Protection Systems
Can I use existing batteries with your kits?
Yes, provided compatibility is confirmed. Use the Solar Calculator to ensure battery capacity matches your solar setup.
Why include circuit breakers and fuses?
These components are legally required in many systems. They prevent overheating, short circuits, and fire risks while protecting equipment and cabling.
Off-Grid Solar
What is off-grid solar?
Off-grid systems operate completely independently from the national grid, generating and storing their own power via solar panels and batteries for remote cabins, RVs, boats, and other applications.
Can I run my whole house on off-grid solar?
Yes, with proper system sizing. You'll need sufficient solar panels and battery capacity for nighttime and cloudy-day operation. Use the LUX Solar Calculator to estimate full requirements.
Maintenance requirements?
Minimal maintenance is needed. Occasionally clean panels of dust or debris, and visually inspect cables and mounts a few times yearly. Lithium batteries require no maintenance like topping up or venting.
Lifespan of panels and batteries?
High-quality panels last approximately 25-30 years at roughly 80% original output. Lithium batteries typically last 10-15 years or 3,000-6,000 cycles depending on usage.
Remote monitoring?
Yes. Most charge controllers and inverters include Bluetooth or Wi-Fi monitoring. Track live performance, solar generation, and battery status via smartphone apps.
Best battery types?
Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are ideal -- lightweight, safe, fast-charging, and long-lasting. Lead-acid batteries cost less upfront but have shorter lifespans and require more maintenance.
Off-grid system costs in New Zealand?
Small cabin or RV setups start around $1,000-$3,000. Full off-grid home systems range from $10,000-$25,000+. The AnyKit tool helps build systems matching your needs and budget.
Warranty & Support
What warranty is offered?
Warranty coverage varies by component. Fixed solar panels include a 10-year mechanical warranty (stationary). Marine & RV installations carry 5-year warranties. Power output is backed by a 25-year warranty (80% rated output).
